Music Update for Next Year and Save-the Date to Honor Emily Howard Meyer

Dear Temple Shalom Families and Friends,

In mid-January, we announced that Emily Howard Meyer will step down from her current role of Cantorial Soloist and Music Educator at Temple Shalom as of June 30, 2022. We created music search committees to plan for the future of music at Temple Shalom.

I am excited to announce that Margo Wagner will be joining us next year as our cantorial intern. Margo has a lovely voice that will suit our congregation well. She has served as an Education Fellow with the Institute of Southern Jewish Life (ISJL) for the past two years, leading morning services, Havdalah, teacher training workshops, religious school programs, and adult education programs.

Margo grew up in Aspen, Colorado, where she cultivated her love for music, skiing, and participating in Shabbat services at Aspen Jewish Congregation. Margo’s passion for music and Judaism continues to flourish as she enjoys playing guitar, percussion, and singing while leading services. During summers growing up, Margo attended Jewish sleep away camp. She loved her time as a camper and eventually became a song leader at both Camp Shwayder in Colorado and Greene Family Camp in Texas. Margo graduated from Indiana University (IU) with a B.A. in Jewish Sacred Music and a minor in Hebrew. During her time at IU, she studied for a semester abroad in Jerusalem in fall of 2018. In Israel she attended Hebrew University and The Jerusalem Academy for Music and Dance. Margo is currently a first-year cantorial student at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC).

I am also pleased to announce that Sarina Elenbogen-Siegel will return to serve the congregation as a student cantor. We are incredibly fortunate to have Sarina return where we will have the opportunity to hear her beautiful voice again during the High Holy Days as well as Shabbat services.

Given that Margo and Sarina will be with us on the weekends, we will continue to explore options to fill our music needs for weekdays (such as choir) and Sunday evenings. As mentioned in January, the Music Search Committee will conduct a search for a Cantorial Soloist/Worship Leader for the longer term, beginning in August 2023.

As we welcome Margo and welcome back Sarina, we will honor and pay tribute to Emily’s multifaceted service to Temple Shalom. Save the date for the evening of Saturday, May 21.

Lastly, please join me in thanking the members of our music search committees, chaired by Debbie Szyfer, and included Jay Chervenak, Frances Cook, Jeanne Goldberg, Deborah Hutton, Barbara Jacobowitz, Betsy Kingery, Michael Schwartz, Cheryl Terwilliger, and Michelle Windmueller. They were joined in these efforts by our Senior Rabbi, Rabbi Ackerman. I appreciate the tremendous hard work they accomplished throughout this process to find us another amazing musical leader for next year.

I look forward to a smooth transition and a vibrant and spiritual future at Temple Shalom.

L’Shalom (In Peace),

Jeff Steger, President
