Temple Shalom is a vibrant inclusive Reform synagogue located in the Washington D.C. area, with 400+ member households, a 250+ student religious school, and a thriving Early Learning Center (ELC). Led by our innovative and dynamic clergy, music and education teams, and Board of Trustees, Temple Shalom celebrates the unique journey of each of our families and members.

Position Description

The Executive Director serves to provide implementation of the strategic operational and financial vision for Temple Shalom and ensure the smooth operations of Temple Shalom with a commitment to embracing, upholding and modeling Reform Jewish values.  The Executive Director is a key member of Temple Shalom’s leadership team, a critical partner of the Board of Trustees, Senior Rabbi, and other clergy and staff, and is entrusted with maintaining and growing the diverse and vibrant culture of the Temple Shalom community. The successful candidate will have strong leadership, organizational and communications skills, fiscal stewardship, human resources management, a track record of innovative problem solving, and the ability to collaborate well with the Board, clergy and staff, members, volunteers, and the wider Jewish and non-Jewish community.

Key Responsibilities

Operations

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Temple including
    • Oversee all aspects of the building’s operations, ensuring that the building, grounds, and equipment are well maintained, licensed and are used in flexible ways to meet the religious, educational and programmatic needs of the congregation
    • Oversee the acquisition and maintenance of new and current technology
    • Manage facilities, personnel, security, vendors, and utility contracts, including rental of Temple facilities to the congregation and outside community
    • Work closely with the Buildings & Grounds and Capital committees on facility maintenance and capital improvement projects including a planned capital campaign and building renovation

 Administrative/Human Resources Management

  • Supervise, manage and evaluate the performance of staff
  • Supervise human resources management, either directly or through a vendor
  • Provide administrative and logistical support and staffing as required for the smooth running of all programming
  • Attend Board, Executive Committee and committee meetings as appropriate

Financial Management

  • Ensure sound financial management including appropriate financial systems and controls to ensure legal compliance, integrity and transparency
    • Oversee all financial operations in partnership with the Treasurer
    • Oversee all financial support and fundraising activities
    • Partner with staff and lay leaders to create and manage the budget, providing regular reports to the Board

Development//Membership/Communications

  • Oversee support for membership functions including existing members and increasing membership
    • Oversee development and implementation of marketing activities
    • Manage Temple communications, publications, and publicity, including website and supervision of social media

Qualifications

  • Five or more years’ successful experience leading or in senior management of a faith-based organization, membership organization, association, not-for-profit organization or business
    • Experience with a membership-based organization and in a Jewish congregation or other Jewish communal organization preferred
  • Ability to work in a collaborative and sacred partnership with Board of Trustees, Senior Rabbi, other clergy and staff, and volunteers
  • A high level of personal initiative, responsibility, discretion, and good judgment
  • Demonstrated track record as a problem solver skilled at guiding, overseeing, and implementing innovative solutions
  • Outstanding interpersonal, management, organizational, and written and oral communications skills
  • Proven track record managing staff and human resource management
  • Proficient at financial management including understanding financial statements and ensuring that fiscal controls and procedures are in place and followed
  • Proficient with technology tools and ability to understand and manage new technology
  • Familiarity with social media and ability to supervise/manage on-line presence, video streaming and conferencing software
  • Strong knowledge of Jewish holidays, rituals, and customs
  • Ability to work periodic evenings and weekend hours as needed to attend worship services, events, religious school, Board meetings, relevant committee meetings and other programs.
