We are so excited to introduce ourselves as the 7th grade Sunday school teachers for the 2017-2018 school year! This year, the 7th graders will be learning about the Holocaust in the context of their own identities as Jews and global citizens. We have so many great activities planned, including the 7th grade retreat, a visit to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and a visit from a Holocaust survivor. Students can anticipate a year of meaningful learning, community building, and personal growth. We can't wait to get started!
Over the next few days, we will be calling each family individually to introduce ourselves, but in the meantime, we wanted to let you know a bit about who we are:
Lisa Heiser-Polin is the Preschool Director here at Temple Shalom. Lisa has written extensive curricula on the Holocaust and confronting bias. In addition, her dissertation explores the efficacy of Holocaust education on Jewish identity. Lisa is a proud Colorado native and moved to Washington D.C. for graduate school in 2003. Here she met her husband, Justin. They live in Silver Spring with their children, the delightful and spunky Benjamin and Olivia.
Naomi Gold is a middle school English teacher at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School. Originally from New Jersey, she taught middle school English and social studies in New York before moving to the Washington, D.C. area two years ago. Naomi is new to Temple Shalom and is looking forward to becoming part of the community.
We look forward to meeting everyone at the Community Kickoff on Sunday, September 17!
Wishing you a happy and healthy new year,
Lisa and Naomi
