First Grade Weekly Email

Dear First Grade Families,

It was wonderful to spend time with all the families who joined us for the Sukkah Building last Sunday! Thanks so much to the Maturana Family for hosting and giving us all the opportunity to perform two important mitzvot--building a sukkah and dwelling in a sukkah--for Sukkot!

Your children will have another opportunity to spend time in a sukkah this Sunday at temple. Each grade will visit the temple's sukkah, located in the back parking lot, for 15 minutes during class.

At our Sukkah Building, a parent brought up a very important point about Sukkot: That the sukkah reminds us that "G-d is all around us." We will use that idea as a springboard to start talking about Genesis and the creation story this week. To help start this conversation, it would be fun if your child could bring something found in nature that he or she thinks is beautiful or interesting for a "show & tell" during our morning meeting. It could be an acorn, leaf, rock, feather--anything your child can easily bring to class.

This week, we will also start to learn the story of Noah and the Ark to pave the way for our Jewish Family Education visit to the National Zoo next Sunday, October 15th, from 9:30 to noon.

The National Zoo is located at 3001 Connecticut Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20008. There is a flat $22 fee for parking. Public transportation is also available. The Connecticut Avenue entrance is equidistant from both the Woodley Park/Zoo/Adams Morgan and the Cleveland Park metro stations. There is also a Metrobus stop directly in front of the Zoo.

We will meet promptly at 9:30 in front of the Visitor's Center and there will be bagels served. Please provide a drink for your child. Every student needs to have an adult with them (parent, grandparent, family friend, etc.). Siblings are welcome to join us. The program ends at noon.

Finally, I shared a Google document with all of you earlier for our snack sign-up schedule. Please let me know if you are not able to access that. Last time I looked, no one had signed up to bring snack this week. If you are able to bring snack this week, please let me know.

Shabbat Shalom,
