Temple Shalom was selected by the Chesapeake Bay Trust as a grant recipient through the Montgomery County Watershed Restoration Outreach Grant Program. Temple Shalom, in Chevy Chase, MD, is proud to have received a $95,000 award which will be used to remove its asphalt parking lot and replace it with permeable pavers. Permeable surfaces allow rainwater to percolate through the paving and into the ground before it runs off, reducing the volume of stormwater runoff and the amount of pollution carried by stormwater runoff. Grant funds will also be used to construct a rain garden and for outreach activities in the community.
Temple Shalom has a long tradition of environmental stewardship and this latest grant is in keeping with the Congregation’s interest in reducing its environmental footprint. Previous efforts include a congregational-wide effort to convert to LED lightbulbs throughout the building, two rainscape projects, the use of permeable pavers in a recent outdoor patio renovation and extensive tree planting efforts.
